MikroTik RouterBOARD RB952Ui-5ac2nD

Contents

Introduction

The MikroTik router can work in different profiles - you can switch over among them. Every profile solves different situations which are described in Features section of each profile. You need to find a suitable profile for your situation and then set-up the router. You can use the map of profiles below, too. Remember, maybe you don't need the router but you need a switch or one cable, instead - if you don't know, please read section about networking first.

Where to buy router

More devices

You can connect 4 or maximally 5 (depending on profile) devices to the the router. If you need more devices, you can extend the router by using a switch. Use one slot (designed for connecting devices) of the router to connect a switch through an ethernet cable. Then you can connect another devices to switch, too. You can find a recomended switch here.

Difference between Lumiboxes and T2s

Be aware that Lumibox and T2 have different behaviour in network. The behavior is described here but be careful about the types of devices that network together.

First configuration

If you bought the router from Lumitrix company, your router is pre-configured to the base profile, you can skip this section. If not, you have to configure the router.

  • If you bought a new router by yourself (not from Lumitrix company), the router is in factory settings.
  • Connect an ethernet cable providing Internet (with DHCP) to the port 1 on the router - this is important for finishing the first configuration.
  • Connect your computer via an ethernet cable to the router (use a port number 2)
  • Plug router to electricity and wait for the start of the router
  • Go to the admin address 192.168.88.1 in your browser. Then login credentials are admin and there is no password.
  • If you can't login to the router (any address or password works), you can reset the router to factory settings
  • Go to WebFig tab (upper part of the window)
  • You can see firmware version of the router in upper part of the window (look for string RouterOS v6.44.6). You may have to upgrade firmware:
    • If the version is specifically 6.44.6, your router has already been upgraded and you can continue.
    • If the version is lower (for example 6.40.5), you will have to do the upgrade:
      • Download the file https://download.mikrotik.com/routeros/6.44.6/routeros-mipsbe-6.44.6.npk to your computer
      • Go to the Files item in the left menu of the admin.
      • Upload the routeros-mipsbe-6.44.6 file (by the upload item). Please wait for finishing of the upload, the file is supposed to have approx 11 MB size.
      • Go to the System item in the left menu and then click to Reboot in submenu. Please wait for rebooting the router - it may take a while. Please don't unplug electricity during this process*.
      • After some time (5 minutes), you can try to go to the admin (and to WebFig tab) again.
      • Please, check that the version (see above) is exactly 6.44.6, if not, repeat the process of upgrade.
      •  * - if you can't go to the admin and you have waited 10 or more minutes, you can try to unplug and plug the router from electricity and if neither this helps, you can try to reset the router to factory settings and repeat the process of upgrade.
    • If the version is higher (for example 7.0.0), please contact Lumitrix company by email support@lumitrix.eu for more instructions.
  • Go to the Files tab in the left menu
  • Upload this configuration file with profile (by the upload item) - https://lumitrix.eu/data/router/mikrotik/6-44-6/base.backup
  • Click to the file base.backup
  • Click the button restore (2x) and then wait for the router to reboot
  • Now the address to admin of the router is 10.50.50.1. Name is admin, password is lumitrix. Please login to the router again.
  • Now we need to download all profiles from the internet:
    • Go to WebFig tab (in top of window)
    • Go to the System item in the left menu and then select the Scripts in the submenu
    • Select the item Init in window with scripts (on right)
    • Click the button Run Script on top
    • Please wait 10 seconds for downloading all profiles
    • Go to the Files in the left menu
    • Please check that you see files: flash/base.backup; flash/switch.backup; flash/wifi_client.backup; flash/skins/skin.json. If not, please repeat this part again (or refresh an admin page, it can help occasionally).
  • Please restart the router again - go to the System item in the left menu and then click the Reboot item in the submenu.
  • Congratulations! Your router has been configured and switched to the base profile. You can change profile too (see below).

Profiles

Map of profiles

The map is a summary of the features section of all the profiles to one picture for better orientation. Map doesn't show all situations, merely the profiles for the router. Maybe you don't need the router, if you don't know, please read section about networking first.

The router is configured to hide unnecessary properties in the admin. If you want to have full access to the router, see how to enable full admin - just for experts!

Legend

"Green ✔" is a preferred variant, "yellow ✔" is a possible variant, "red ✖" is a impossible variant, "—" doesn't make sense.

Only T2s

Lumiboxes or Lumiboxes with T2s

Base (ethernet, gsm, wifi can be used in Lumiboxes)

This is a default setup of the router purchased from Lumitrix.

Features

  • Internet from ethernet:
    • Lumiboxes or T2s (or mix):
      • You can connect devices to ports 2-5 in the router. The port 1 serves for the Internet connection.
      • If the Internet is connected to the router, you can synchronize four devices - Lumiboxes or T2s.
  • Internet from wifi:
    • Only lumiboxes:
      • You can connect lumiboxes to a wifi network, connect them to the router to ports 2-5 and synchronize them too. Leave the port 1 empty in this situation.
  • Internet from GSM (or failover with ethernet)
    • Lumiboxes or T2s (or mix):
      • You can connect devices to ports 2-5 in the router. The port 1 serves for the primary Internet connection, but you can leave port 1 empty.
      • You can put the GSM modem (how to buy gsm modem) to USB port.
      • If the Internet is connected to the router, you can synchronize four devices - Lumiboxes or T2s.

Settings

  • Please switch profile of the router to the base - see how to switch profile.
  • If you use GSM, SIM card should not carry a pin code (you can adjust it in your mobile phone).
  • If the Internet from GSM doesn't work, you may have to configure operator parameters, go to the section how to configure GSM modem.
  • We assume that the Internet from ethernet cable has DHCP, if not, see how to set static IP.

Wifi transmitting

  • Router doesn't transmit any WiFi network by default.
  • If you need WiFi network too, you can enable it:
    • connect your computer through LAN to a port 2-5
    • go to admin address (10.50.50.1) and login to the router (name admin, password lumitrix)
    • go to WebFig tab (in the upper part of the window)
    • Select the Wireless item in the menu.
    • You can enable 2.4 GHZ (wlan1) or 5 GHZ (wlan2) or both networks by clicking the E button near the interface name.
    • Default name for 2.5 GHZ is lumitrixwifi, for 5 GHZ is lumitrixwifi_5GHZ. The password is the same as default password for controlling wifi of Lumitrix devices.
    • If you want to change the name of network, click on wlan1 or wlan2. The name of the wifi network is "SSID" parameter. After making the change, click on ok.
    • If you want to change the password:
      • Go to tab Security Profiles
      • Click on default
      • Edit WPA Pre-Shared Key and WPA2 Pre-Shared Key to new password.
      • Click on ok

Switch (useful for T2s on sim)

Router works as an ordinary switch in this profile. You can use a normal switch instead of router (see how to buy switch) - and it is preferred variant.

Features

  • Internet from GSM
    • Only T2s:
      • You have to put SIM to each T2 device.
      • Then you can connect devices together using all ports on the router (you can connect 5 devices).
  • Extend existing network with DHCP and NAT:
    • Lumiboxes or T2s (or mix):
      • You can connect the Internet with DHCP to the port 1 and devices to ports 2-5.
      • This variant isn't recomended because in this way isolated subnetworks hasn‘t been created. You‘d better select the base profile in this case.

Settings

Wifi client

Router is connected to a wifi network and distributes the Internet to devices and does the synchronization.

Features

  • Internet from wifi:
    • Lumiboxes or T2s (or mix):
      • You can connect devices to ports 1-5 on the router.
      • Warning: the router doesn‘t comprise external antennas, so in case of outdoor use there can be a weak signal.

Settings

  • Please switch a profile of the router to the wifi client - see how to switch profile.
  • Now you have to fill the wifi name and the wifi password to the router:
    • connect your computer through LAN to a port 1-5
    • go to the admin address (10.50.50.1) and login to the router (name admin, password lumitrix)
    • go to WebFig tab (in the upper part of the window)
    • Select the Wireless item in the menu.
    • Enable wlan1 or wlan2 using the button E. Wlan1 is for 2.4 GHZ networks, wlan2 for 5 GHZ networks.
    • Click on the wlan1 or the wlan2 to configure a wifi name:
      • Fill the wifi name to the SSID item in the form. Then click on ok.
    • Now please go to the tab Security Profiles.
    • Click to default.
    • Fill the wifi password to WPA Pre-Shared Key and WPA2 Pre-Shared Key items and then click on OK.
    • Please wait until the connection is established and check that the Internet really works.

How to do the factory reset

  • Please unplug the power jack from the router.
  • Press the reset button with a pin.

  • Plug the power jack to the router (and keep pressing the reset button)
  • Wait for 5 seconds until the USR led starts blinkink

  • Stop pressing the reset button
  • Warning: don't push the reset button longer than 10 second, otherwise the router can be demaged.
  • Now you can access the router on IP 192.168.88.1, user is admin and there is no password.
  • If you did the first configuration (or you have the router from Lumitrix company) , you don't need to do the first configuration again - however, you will have to switch the router to some profile.

How to switch profile

  • If your router is in the profile switch now, changing the profile turns a little difficult. The router doesn't provide DHCP address (becouse it isn't a router, but a switch). If you want to set another profile up, you will have to change IP address in your computer (on ethernet network card) from automatic (DHCP) to static. The IPv4 of your computer have to be 10.50.50.10, netmask 255.255.255.0, DHCP and gateway should be left unfilled. Or you can proceed to factory reset of the router.

  • Connect your computer via lan cable to the router (use the port number 2)
  • Go to admin address 10.50.50.1 in your browser. Then login credentials are admin and password lumitrix.
  • Go to a WebFig tab (in the upper part of the window)
  • Select Files item in left menu
  • Click to the file with profile:
    • base - flash/base.backup
    • switch - flash/switch.backup
    • wifi client - flash/wifi_client.backup
  • Click the button restore (2x) and then wait for the router to reboot
  • In case you have changed IP address of your computer, you will have to change IP address back to auto (DHCP).

How to configure GSM modem

  • Default APN of GSM modem is "internet" and without any authorization. If you need to change GSM parameters, please do the following:
  • connect your computer through ethernet to port 2-5
    • go to admin address (10.50.50.1) and login to the router (name admin, password lumitrix)
    • go to the WebFig tab (in the upper part of the window)
    • Select the Interfaces item in the menu
    • Click on the ppp-out1
    • And then you can change APN, user and password. Finally click on OK.

How to set static IP

  • We assume that the Internet from an ethernet cable has DHCP, if not, you have to configure the router for static IP:
  • connect your computer through ethernet to port 2-5
    • go to admin address (10.50.50.1) and login to the router (name admin, password lumitrix)
    • go to the WebFig tab (in the upper part of the window)
    • Select the IP item in the left menu and then select the DHPC Client item in the submenu
      • Click on the D button under the "defconf" label on right
    • Now we want to set-up the address and netmask:
      • Select the IP item in the left menu and then select Addresses in the submenu
        • Click on the "Add new" button
        • Put your address to the address item. The address has to cointain the network mask in short format after the slash - for example 192.168.0.205/24.
        • If you know only long format of mask (for example 255.255.255.0), use this calculator https://subnet-calculator.samuraj-cz.com/subdom/subnet-calculator/index.php
          • Put IP and mask to the form, click to calculate and look for the result CIDR mask (in our example it is 24)
        • Select ether1 as interface
        • Click on ok
    • Now we want to set-up a gateway:
      • Select the IP item in the left menu and then select Routes in the submenu
        • Click on the Add new button
        • Click on the down arrow next to the label Gateway and then see the input. Type your gateway to the input (192.168.0.1 for example).
        • Click on ok.
    • The router has default dns servers set-up to google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). It is a recommend variant and the internet should be working by now.
    • But if you want, you can change DNS servers - this is optional:
      • Select the IP item in the left menu and then select the DNS item in the submenu
      • You can see two items next to the label Servers in the upper part of the form.
      • You can edit it, but if you use failover with GSM modem, one of the serveres has to be public. Ideally change only one server (8.8.8.8) and keep the second to 8.8.4.4.
      • Then click on ok.

How to buy GSM modem

  • The modem has to be the Huawei LTE USB Stick E3372
  • USB modem can be purchased from Lumitrix company. In such case we guarantee that the modem will be completely functional.
  • You can buy modem on your own - from Amazon for example - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=E3372+huawei+stick
  • The modem exists in more types by country (each country can have different GSM frequencies). You have to buy the modem for your country.
  • But the modem has to be in variant Stick, not in variant HiLink. Unfortunatelly; the sellers do not indicate the type of modem on sale. We suggest that you specify the type in notice of order ("I want variant stick, not HiLink").

How to enable full admin

  • The router is configured to hide unnecessary properties in the admin. If you are expert, you can show the full admin (it is on your own risk):
    • Click on Design Skin in the left menu
    • Click on Design Skin in the left menu again
